012: Surviving Medicine – USMLE Step 1 Advice – How I got a 260

Welcome to Surviving Medicine, the podcast that takes you into the mind of the best and brightest premedical and medical students, residents and physicians discussing where Medical Education is today and the future of healthcare tomorrow.

Each week we bring you an inside look at how to survive medical education and how to thrive as a practicing physician balancing work, patients, family and friends.

My name is Frank Cusimano, your host, a third-year medical student and third year PhD student – with a passion for anything health, wellness, medical education, and healthcare related.

So today we have a special treat planned. While the majority of our podcasts, as you know, are interviews, we want to make sure we give you all the tools you need to excel and thrive either as a premedical student applying to medical school or as a resident navigating board certifications, etc. Periodically we will be doing an episode that focuses on providing you all with tips, pointers, advice, and motivation to make sure you all get the most out of this podcast! I personally will be recording most of these episodes, but don’t worry, for those who are looking for advice for residency, step 1, or as a physician, I will be calling on the experts to make sure you all receive valuable information that will help you advance your career and remove some of the stress during the process.

These episodes I think will be the most beneficial for all of you out there who are trying to stay sane and for all of you who are struggling to navigate and survive the practice of medicine. There is a lot of information out there on the web. If you look at Reddit or Student Doctor Network you will constantly find contradictory information, inaccurate representation of the facts, an overall uneasiness when it comes to deciding what is accurate advice. For this podcast, we want to remove the anonymity so you can make sure no one is trying to give you bad advice! We want you to excel and It is my personal mission to make sure that you all get through medical school with the best experience possible.

For today we have a special episode for all of you first and second year medical students out there! This entire episode is going to be one student’s take on studying for USMLE Step 1.  This is advice from someone who scored 260 and a letter they wrote to us titled:

My Step 1 Study Plan & What I would have done differently
